Book recommendation — Love, loss and laughs

Zoran B.

Today I have a book recommendation for you.

Now, I usually stay away from recommending books; too many times friends and people I recommended books to didn’t find my recommendations as exciting as I did. Everyone has different tastes, so when I recommended a book, people read it out of politeness, maybe curiosity, but most were rarely touched by it the way I was. I understand that because I am the same. So many times someone close to me put a book into my hands and said “read this”. And I did. Every time. Sometimes it was fantastic. More often, it was a struggle to go through, but I did because every recommendation comes with the follow-up question “how did you like it”? Suffice it to say I learned not to press my favorite books onto other people, to save them from wasting time on something they’d rather not read, and lying about how much they liked it.

This was a long preamble to do something I vowed not to do. But, once I closed the last page on Eddie Winston Is Looking for Love by Marianne Cronin, I thought — here’s a book that leaves you feeling warm and hopeful, a heartwarming, humorous story about love, loss, and the unexpected connections that can transform our lives. A book I’d recommend to everyone, a book worth breaking a vow for!

The story centers on Eddie Winston, who has never been kissed. Nothing strange there, except—Eddie is 90! He is volunteering at a charity shop, sorting through donations that often include letters and tokens of love from people who died without family or anyone else to claim those mementoes. One day, Eddie meets Bella, a 24-year-old woman who is grappling with the recent death of her boyfriend. She is donating mementoes of their love in a box, and Eddie saves them. Their encounter sparks a unique friendship, with Bella determined to help Eddie find the love he has longed for.

I can’t say any more about the plot without revealing too much.

Love and Loss
The novel explores the themes of love and loss through their intertwined stories. Eddie and Bella learn from each other’s experiences and perspectives. Eddie’s wisdom and humour, and Bella’s youthful energy, create a dynamic that is both touching and funny. Their story is a celebration of the connections that bridge generations, reminding readers that it’s never too late to open one’s heart to love and companionship.

I heartily recommend this book. And if you read it, let me know how you liked it! 😉
